Why this course?

This course on sensing instruments is prepared for design engineers, technicians and technical sales who need to understand different sensing instruments used on diesel generators and how they work and how they are selected.

Course Learning Objectives

At the completion of this course the student should be able to:

  • List different operating parameters for diesel generator auxiliary systems

  • Explain different types of temperature and pressure switches and their applications

  • Explain different types of senders and their applications

  •  List different types of differential pressure switches

  • Explain how float and flow switches work

  •  List and explain different switch configurations

  • Explain how RTD’s work and their applications

  • Explain Thermocouples types and how they work

  • Explain difference between international color codes for thermocouples

  •  Explain how Magnetic Pickup works and its application

Course Contents

The course explains the different operating parameters of diesel generator auxiliary systems. Then the course will explain in some detail how to measure and sense these parameters for the purpose of metering (indication) and for protection. The course covers the temperature, pressure, level and flow switches which can be seen on diesel generators. Then the course explains the sending units and their resistance diagram. The RTD’s and thermocouples are explained in some details and finally the speed sensors are explained. The student should study the lesson completely then answer the quiz questions. The student should score at least 60% in the quiz to pass this course and get the certificate. The course has a weight of 2 PDH. The following are the contents of the course:
